This week, my staff paired with LA Kitchen to volunteer as tour guides for AARP Foundation's Grocery Guides program. LA Kitchen worked to bring the Grocery Guides program to LA and my staff expanded the program to bring Grocery Guides to our CD12 senior residents.
Grocery Guides was created by the AARP Foundation to help seniors gain the confidence and attain the skills for healthy shopping on a budget through hour-long tours through grocery stores.
During the one hour tour, a volunteer tour leader led a small group of seniors through the grocery store, giving participants better tools for food shopping in an economical and nutritious way.
Participants learned how to: stretch budgets to buy more fruits and vegetables, read and compare food labels - focusing on their own special dietary needs, and calculate unit pricing to find bargains. Participants left the tour with a gift bag that included a booklet that takes an in-depth look at some topics covered during the tour and a $10 gift card to help with future smart shopping.
