This week, I am proud to honor Ernie Hilgar, a 43-year resident of CD 12, as our 2016 Veterans Day honoree. Ernie has served in the US Army from 1963 to 1964 and has since devoted his life to veteran’s advocacy. He is an active member of the Sepulveda VA and sits on their Patient Advisory Council. Ernie serves as the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Camp Kearney Van Nuys Chapter 13’s Legislative Chair and has logged over 3,750 volunteer hours as a driver for disabled veterans for the organization.
Ernie has provided input directly to the United States Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert A. McDonald, his Special Assistant Vince Kane, Former Director of the VA National Center on Homelessness Among Veterans, and the architect responsible for the Master Plan WLA VA. He was an integral member in organizing the Greater Los Angeles Veteran’s Summit.
In addition to all his volunteer activities, Ernie has spoken on behalf of veterans at many WLA VA outreach venues for support of the Master Plan WLA VA and at many community venues including Neighborhood Council meetings and Valley Alliance of Neighborhood Councils regarding the Sepulveda and WLA VA issues.
Ernie has authored resolutions to protect the WLA VA and is a DAV Activist for veterans rights in the State of California and nationally. In 2015, Ernie became a certified member of Veterans Administration Voluntary Services and a member of the Veteran’s Service Organization Coalition for the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs (WLA VA). The Veterans Service Organization Coalition’s positive consensus input is now an integral part of the legislation codifying what veterans expect in the future for this site.
Alongside his dedication to the Veterans in our community, Ernie is an active resident in Council District 12 and has been a board member of numerous organizations including, Valley Vote, North Hills West Neighborhood Council, Granada Hills South Neighborhood Council, Granada Hills South Neighborhood Watch, Old Granada Hills Residents Group, and Northridge Guild of Children’s Hospital.
Our sincerest appreciation and gratitude goes to Ernie and to all of our US Veterans for your service and dedication to our community and our country.
