Yesterday, over 200 veterans and guests joined us for the 3rd Council District 12 Interfaith Breakfast and community symposium at New Horizons in North Hills. This highly anticipated biannual event entitled, “A Time for Gratitude,” focused on celebrating the selfless service and sacrifice of all veterans while at the same time exploring urgent issues such as employment, housing, benefits and mental health.
An esteemed panel of federal, state and local experts including: James J. Schickel, (Sergeant Major, USMC Ret.) California Department of Veterans Affairs, Stephanie Stone, (USN Ret), Chief Deputy Director - LA County Dept. of Military & Veterans Affairs, Leyla Ramos, (Sgt. US Army) U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs, Chatsworth Center and Joseph Chicas, Office of Veterans Affairs - Office of Mayor Eric Garcetti, shared their knowledge and expertise with those in attendance.
For me, the most important thing was to remind all the attendees that acknowledging the timeless gift veterans have bestowed upon all of us and our wonderful democracy is a year-round responsibility, not just on holidays.
