This week, the students took a trip to the Public Works Building to learn about the City's infrastructure.
The students took a training course on Navigate LA, a web-based mapping application that delivers maps and reports based on data supplied by various Departments of the City. Navigate LA is a powerful GIS tool utilizing spatial data, where the public can access a whole host of information about the City's sewers, streets, lights and trees.
The students learned to solve problems in the community utilizing Navigate LA, from identifying locations in their neighborhood where more trees can be planted, to how to cross-reference exact locations when taking in constituent service requests.
Students were also exposed to the various career opportunities available within the Bureau of Engineering and fields of study such as: civil engineer, computer science and Geographic Information System
