Ensuring Public Safety during Heatwaves

This week, I submitted a motion to have the DWP General Manager report to Council immediately regarding the recent Valley power outages and the testing, maintenance and replacement of insufficient or outdated infrastructure.
I further requested that DWP develop an emergency plan for any future outages so that cooling centers can be immediately activated in the event of a future overnight outage occurring during a heat wave.
This week, thousands of Valley residents were once again left without power, overnight. This was caused by one full circuit outage and three partial circuit outages.
The record-setting heatwave is expected to continue through the weekend. Residents have reported temperatures upward of 90-degrees in their homes – a situation that is as unhealthy as it is uncomfortable.
With a significant amount of the DWP’s rate structure related to reliability – these outages are unacceptable. Their excessive occurrence in Valley communities indicates a disparity in how funding for updating and maintaining San Fernando Valley infrastructure is allocated.
