This week, the Federal Interagency Task Force released a statement on Natural Gas Storage Safety regarding its findings on the causes and effects of the Aliso Canyon Gas Leak and the measures needed to prevent another disaster.
This Sunday, October 23, will mark the one-year anniversary of the beginning of the Aliso Canyon Gas Leak, the largest natural gas leak in US history which forced the relocation of over 20,000 residents, closed two schools for over a four month period, and negatively affected countless local businesses.
While recommendations by the Federal Interagency Task Force on Natural Gas Storage Safety correct serious shortcomings in the responses to these disasters, it falls short of mandating that these facilities not be located within communities. Until facilities like this are not allowed near our communities, disasters like Aliso Canyon will always be a possibility.
