Today, I was pleased to honor Granada Hills Charter High School’s Academic Decathlon Team, the 2015 National Champions, in City Hall. The Academic Decathlon team won its fourth national title in five years this spring.
Over 30,000 hours of studying paid off for Granada Hills Charter High School when they took the coveted national championship after a grueling three-day competition accruing 53,592 points out of a possible 60,000.
The members of Granada Hills Charter’s team competed with over 500 students from 50 states on ten events covering topics in Art, Music, Social Science, Science, Economics, Language and Literature, and Mathematics. Each also writes essays and is interviewed by judges on prepared and off-the-cuff topics.
Granada Hills Charter is the only school in the almost 35-year history of the National Academic Decathlon competition and the only public school, traditional or charter, to capture the national title three years in a row and now four times in five years.
