Neighborhoods FIRST Meeting with LAUSD

This week our Neighborhoods FIRST coordinator met with LAUSD Pupil Services and Attendance coordinator Katie Rivezzo to discuss how the district provides services to young children experiencing homelessness or near homelessness.
This is a particularly vital issue. As more families experience housing insecurity, we need to ensure that our students can continue to learn and pursue educational opportunities that allow them to succeed. To that end LAUSD has developed partnerships with multiple different service providers to alleviate some of the hardships that might impact a student.
Some programs and services include early education centers where homeless children can receive quality day care from the hours of 6:30 AM to 6:00 PM. The district has also created Christmas gift programs and partnered with Operation School Bell so children may receive supplies and clothing that they might otherwise not be able to afford.
When it comes to working towards a more prosperous future, there is nothing more important than ensuring opportunities for our children. My office will be looking at ways we can support and strengthen these programs for at-risk youth in the coming weeks as well as informing you of opportunities to help.
